Politics free Honours?

Uuuuuuurgh! I am doing my best to resist the temptation to explode! All week we have had leaked evidence trickling out of how Blair and his cronies have abused the Honours system. We have been assured that it is a lengthy process, taking a minimum of 18 months or so for each candidate to be selected and Ministers do not "sex it up". Right.

So we are to believe that the England Rugby Team were in line for a Knighthood and several OBE's before they won the cup.

Despite the obvious hand of Downing Street, I must say that I am pleased to see these guys honoured. I just wish that they had been processed the way everyone else is supposed to be, then there wouldn't be a smell of nepotism and desperation to show how "sports friendly" we are. Right Tone?

Nepotism in politics? I would have thought that would never happen. ;-)

I thought the fact that it normally takes 18 months to pick those who get the honours is more damming of the whole honours process.

The government always picks those who get the awards and whoever is in government choses them so that we see them in a good light.

I believe the whole honours system sucks, why have a token nurse or school crossings person when most of the list is always made up of civil servants. Everybody working towards making the country and better/safer place should be honoured, let's start a campain for a new public holiday to replace these bogus honours.

I think there needs to be some form of recognition for achievement or service - I question whether either the civil service or the government of the day should have any say over it!
